Mayer's Day Ends Just as it Begins

JR Motorsports Race Report Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023 Race 26 of 33: Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway Track Specs: 1.5-mile tri-oval/ 200 laps Race Winner: John Hunter Nemechek Mayer’s finish: 37th Points position: 5th (-34) Sam Mayer, driver of the No. 1 Huck’s Market / Accelerate Pros Chevrolet, succumbed to an unfortunate early end to today’s event at Kansas Speedway after getting involved in a lap-20 wreck that forced the No. 1 Chevrolet to the garage to end their day prematurely. Mayer was set to have speed after a quick qualifying session took place earlier in the morning. Today’s finish marked the end of the regular season for the NASCAR Xfinity Series. With the reseeding of the points heading into the opening round of the NXS Playoffs, Mayer finds himself fifth in points, just 34 markers out of the series lead. Race Rundown

  • Mayer started the day off strong after NXS qualifying set the No. 1 Chevrolet in the 13th position to start the Saturday afternoon event. The yellow flags started to drop in the opening laps of the race as Mayer held steady in the 13thposition.

  • On lap-20, as the field exited the fourth corner, the young JR Motorsports driver was hit on the right side, knocking the No. 1 sideways and sending Mayer on a long slide across the frontstretch and into the path of oncoming traffic with nowhere to go.

  • The Franklin, Wis. native came down pit road under the caution for the team to repair the No. 1 Chevrolet, but the damage proved to be unrepairable for Mayer, bringing an abrupt end to a promising afternoon.

  • In the end, Mayer was scored with a 37th-place finish. Sam Mayer, driver No. 1 Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet team “Really an unfortunate day for this No. 1 Huck’s Market / Accelerate Pros Chevrolet. I could feel we were going to have a lot of speed going into today but sometimes this is a part of it unfortunately. I hate that we could not show what we really had but we will pick our heads up and head to Bristol to start the playoffs.”
